The Operation Is Listed In The Annual Report As "Caesarean Section Necessitated By Pelvic Deformity". He Left Winnipeg For Chicago And Lived There In 1907. In 1921 He Moved To Pocohontas, Ab. He Graduated From Trinity Medical School, University Of Toronto, 1881 And Awarded The First Silver Medal.He Studied In New York, Glasgow, London And Berlin. He Moved To Winnipeg And Married. In 1882 He Was Registrar Of The College Of Physicians And Surgeons Of Manitoba And Was One Of Founders Of Manitoba Medical College. He Was Prof Of Physiology And Histology And In 1886 Became Surgeon- In- Chief At St. Boniface Hospital. In 1893 The Hospital Built A New Operating Theatre With An Amphitheatre Seating 120 Where He Conducted Operative Clinics. Since Many Icelandic In Manitoba Suffered From Hydatid Cysts, By 1892 Ferguson Operated On Them And Had The Most Knowledge In America. In 1894 He Moved To Chicago To Operated In Chicago Hospital Which He Later Owned. He Became In 1910 President Of The Western Surgical & Gynecological Society. He Was Renowned For Operative Technigues On Hernias. He Suffered From Diabetes And Carbuncles And He Died In 1911 |

Served In Ramc As Chemist In Water Supply From 1914 - 1918. Was Professor Of Biochemistry In 1919 In Faculty Of Medicine Until Retirement In 1946. He Was A Biochemist Of The Winnipeg General Hospital. His Major Work Was In Endocrinology, Iodine Metabolism And The Thyroid. In 1928 He Published A Number Of Books. His Alternate Career Was With The Fisheries Research Board. His Association Began With The Appointment To The Biological Board In 1928. He Became Chairman In 1934 And Was A Prime Mover In Increasing Its Activities. His Contributions To The Fisheries Research Board Wee Marked By The Launching Of A Research Vessel In 1958 & The Award Of A Cmg In 1946. He Was A Member Of The Royal Society Of Canada , Royal Institute Of Chemistry, Chemical Institute Of Canada. He Died On September 25, 1947 |

He Was On Staff Of The Municipal Hospital And Was In Charge Of Infectious Disease Until Is Own Health Suffered And He Was Sent To Ninette Sanatorium Where He Assisted The Staff. He Joined The Canadian Army Medical Corps In Charge Of Military Medical Wards At Deer Loge Hospital. In 1918 The Prov. Mental Hospital Services Were Reorganizing Psychiatric Care And He Became The Provincial Psychiatrist After A Period Of Study Of Psychiatry In North America And Europe, A Post He Held For 24 Years. He Was The Only Psychiatrist In Manitoba Engaged In Private Consultative Practice. He Became A Well Known Expert In Forensic Psychiatry. He Served As Dean Of Medicine, Manitoba Medical College From 1931 To 1949; Pres. Of Royal College Of Physicians & Surgeons Of Can. 1942-1943, And Of Medical Council Of Canada, & A Founder Of Assoc. Of Canadian Medical Colleges. He Died In 1960 |

She Moved To Manitoba, Passed The Examinations Of The Medical Board And Was The First Woman Member Of College Of Physicians And Surgeons In Manitoba. She Practised In Winnipeg For 16 Years, Making Diseases Of Women And Children Her Specialty. She Was Associated With Temperance And Equal Suffrage Movements And She Held Important Offices. She Founded The Manitoba Equal Suffrage Society And Was President And Then Vice President For Many Years. She Moved To Calgary And Retired From Medical Practice. She Was Vice President Of The Dominion Wctu And Also Vice President Of The Ottawa Equal Suffrage Society And The Calgary Wcty. She Died In Calgary At The Age Of 71 On April 23, 1913 |

He Became Provincial Secretary In The Norquay Government In 1884 And Professor Of Diseases Of Women And Children In Manitoba Medical College. He Moved To Vancouver In 1894. And Was Licensed In Bc In 1889. Died On December 10,1926 In Vancouver, Bc |

description: | Dr. David Alexander Stewart, Born In Kent County, On, February 15, 1874; Graduated In Theology From Manitoba College In 1899. Then He Entered Manitoba Medical College In 1902; Graduated In 1906 And Was The First Senior Intern. He Was Interested In Epidemiology And The Study And Treatment Of Tb In 1908 He Was Executive Director Of The Tuberculosis Society. In 1909 He Had Tb And Was Forced To Retreat To The Trudeau Sanatorium On Saranac Lake, Ny. This Sanatorium Served As The Model For All Others. Dr. Trudeau Found Through Personal Experience That A Regiment Of Fresh Air, Good Food And Complete Rest Was A Healing Agent For Tb Patients. Dr. Stewart Used His Time Convalescing Learning The Principles Of The Cure That Would Be Used At The Proposed Manitoba Sanatarium. During His Absence The Provincial Government Grant Of $I75,000 Was Approved For The Site At Ninette, Mb, The Site Chosen By Dr. Stewart. In 1909 He Became Building Administrator And Later Medical Superintendent Of Manitoba Sanitarium At Ninette, Mb. The Sanatarium Opened With 65 Beds On May 24, 1910 As The Only One West Of Gravenhurst, On. Although He Was Often Bedridden From 1929 Until His Death In 1937 He Remained Head Of The Sanatorium And It Grew To 300 Beds. The Tb Clinic Of Winnipeg Was Renamed The D.A. Stewart Centre For Respiratory Disease In 1968. |

He Was A Fellow Of The Royal Society Of Canada In 1947 And A Fellow Of The Royal Society Of Edinburgh In 1953. He Died Dec 26, 1981. |

He Was A Surgeon And Interested In Diseases Of The Eyes, Ear, Nose And Throat, Especially Ophthalmology And Became The First True Specialist In Western Canada. He Was Active In And Proficient In Many Sports Especially Boxing And Riding. He Served As The 2nd Dean Of Manitoba Medical College From 1887 To 1898. In 1898 He Went To The Klondike And While There He Did Much To Reduce Diseases Such As Typhoid. He Returned To Winnipeg In 1900 And Resumed A Busy Practice And Continued Teaching At Eh Manitoba Medical College. When Ww1 Began He Offered His Services But Was Declined Because He Was Too Old - 62 Years. In 1916 He Went To France And In 1917 Returned To Winnipeg. In 1922 He Went To Victoria. He Died September 1, 1926 |

He Confined All His Effort To Surgery And Became A Surgeon To The Winnipeg General Hospital, Physician To The Maternity Hospital And The Children'S Home As Well As Chief Surgeon To The Cpr. In 1882 He Was Medical Officer Of Health For The City At $!200 Per Year; And For The Provincial Government To Check On Health Of Immigrants. The Manitoba Medical College Building Completed In 1884 Had Dr. Kerr As Its First Dean. In 1885 Metis Under Riel Rebelled A 2nd Time And Dr. Kerr Was Surgeon Major To Command The Base Hospital At The Winnipeg General Hospital. He Later Went To George Washington University On Staff. His Health Deteriorated And He Bought An Estate "Antrim" In Virginia And Bred Horses. He Died February 2, 1911 |

He Graduated From Edinburgh With A Degree Of Mb. Ch. B. In 1908. He Held Appointments In Asylums And As Pathologist To The Royal Woverhampton Hospital. His Interest In Cerebrospinal Fluid Ended In A Book. He Joined The Ramc At The Begining Of Wwi And Was Later Invalided Out Of Service. Dr. Alex Gibson, A Classmate Persuaded Him To Be A Professor Of Pathology At The Manitoba Medical College In 1915. His Writings Became A Great Success. He Was Interested In Teaching And His Innovations Was A Museum Of Pathology. Which Developed In Winnipeg With A Collection Of Mounted Specimen, Photographs, Charts And X-Rays. He Moved To Toronto And Developed A New Museum. Museums Lost Favour In The Teaching Of Pathology. In 1937 He Was Prof. Of Pathology At The University Of Toronto And Retirement In 1954. He Received The Gold Headed Cane, Highest Honour Of The American Assoc. Of Pathologists And Bacteriologists & Honourary Degrees From Oslo, Norway, And U Of M. He Died March 1979 |

During The War They Turned Their Hospital Over To The Iode As The First Military Convalescent Hospital In Canada. He Was Chief Surgeon From 1905 - 1914. In 1909 He Was President Of The Canadian Medical Assoc. He Was A Founder Of Manitoba Medical College And As Professor Of Anatomy Gave The First Lecture To The Medical Students. He Was A Prof. Of Surgery; On Retirement Appointed Prof.Emeritus. He Was Medical Officer Of The Winnipeg Field Battery; At 62 He Organized And Was The Commanding Officer And Surgical Doctor Of No.3 Casualty Clearing Station. This Unit Embarked At Montreal Port On The Ss "Grampian" On July 1, 1915. Once During The War He Had 35 Medical Officers On Duty And 2400 Casualties Passed Through The Hospital In One Day. He Was Medical Director In Great West Life Assurance Co. He Died In Sept.10,1928 |

On Senate Of U Of Alberta In 1908 & 1912; President Of Red Cross In Alberta; Assist. Surgeon Of The 90th Regiment Of Winnipeg And Honourary Colonel Of The 82nd Battalion Cef. He Graduated From The University Of Glasgow And Came To Fort Garry In 1849 As Medical Officer With Military Pensioners Commanded By Major W.B. Coldwell. Married Harriet Sinclair Of The Red River Settlement In 1852 And They Had Several Children. In 1856 Was Sent By Hbc To Moose Factory And Was Appointed Chief Trader In 1860. In 1862 He Was Transferred Back To Fort Garry As Second In Command To Governor William Mactavish. At The Beginning Of The Red River Insurrection In 1869 Governor Mactavish Was Ill So Dr. William Cowan Was In Charge Of The Fort. When Riel Took Over Fort Garry, Dr. Cowan Was Imprisoned. In July 1870 Cowan Escaped And With His Wife And Child Left Lower Fort Garry By York Boat To Hudson Bay, Where They Sailed For England. They Returned In 1872. Dr. Cowan Chaired The Meeting Called In 1879 To Form The Historic And Scientific Society Of Manitoba, And Became Its First Vice President. When The Winnipeg General Hospital Was Incorporated In 1882 He Was Appointed An Honourary Consultant. He Died In St. Paul In 1902 |

Dr. Bird Married The Daughter Of Donald Ross In 1866 (The Widow Of Charles Mcdermot). He Was Educated At St. Johns College In Winnipeg And Studied Medicine At Guy'S Hospital In London. He Practised In Red River Where He Succeeded Dr. Bunn As Coroner For The District Of Assiniboia In 1861 And Was Coroner At The First Murder In Winnipeg. In 1868 Was On The Council Of Assiniboia ; In 1869 He Was A Member Of Provisional Convention Called By Louis Riel To Draw Up A Bill Of Rights For The New Province Of Manitoba. In December 1870 At The First Election After Manitoba Joined Confederation, He Was Elected To The Legislative Assembley Representing St. Paul'S. He Was A Member Of The First Provisional Board Of Education In 1871. He Was Speaker Of The Assembly From 1873 - 1874 And Gave An Adverse Ruling Regarding A Bill To Incorporate The City Of Winnipeg. Resentment Was Such That He Was Dragged From His Sleigh And A Pail Of Tar Thrown Over Him. He Owned The First Drugstore With A Soda Fountain In The Canadian West. He Died In London In May 1876 |

The Small Building Adjacent To The Manitoba Medical College Was The Provincial Laboratory And Domain Of Dr. Gordon Bell. There He Became A Leader In The Control Of Typhoid Fever, And Tuberculosis. He Was Responsible For Manitoba'S Public Health Act. He Died In 1923. Gordon Bell High School Was Named After Him. He Was A Naturalist, Conservationist And A Crack Shot. He Helped Build The Windego Lodge On Lake Manitoba. Later He Joined Namaycush Fishing Club Lodge At Fox Lake. In August 1923 He Visited Brandon To Investigate An Epidemic Of Virulent Streptococcal Pharyngitis. Later He Went To Fox Lake And There Developed The Dread Symptoms And Died 48 Hours Later On August 8, 1923. He Had Two Children |

Later He Was Appointed Surgeon At The Stony Mountain Penitentiary, A Position He Held For 15 Years, Resigning To Resume Private Practice In The Fort Rouge Areas Of Winnipeg. Died June 27, 1929 |
