These Workeres Were Called "Stationmen", The Majority Recently Arrived Immigrants. They Walked From The Railhead, 100 Or More Miles To The Contractor'S Cache Nearest To The Job Where They Were Issued Basic Tools Such As Axes, Shovels, Picks Barrow Wheels, Tin Stove, Few Nails And Groceries, Mostly Flour, Sowbelly, And Beans. Then It Was Up To Them To Build A Shelter, Hew Planks And Carry On. "Stationmen" Worked As Small Sub-Contractors, Up To 16 Hours For 6 And At Times 7 Days A Week, Surrounded By Hordes Of Mosquitoes And Black Flies. To Excavate Essential Drainage Ditches It Was Necessary To Chop Out Permafrost

The Last Spike Was Driven At Fort Fraser When Track Laid From The East Connected With Track Laid From The West At Prince Rupert. During 1913, The End Of Steel Of Gtpr Main Line To Prince Rupert Was At Tete Jaune Cache. This Temporary Town Embraced All Facilities: Gamblers, Bootleggers And Sporting Ladies To Quickly Part Hard Earned Wages From Naive Workers Without Having To Go To Edmonton To Go Broke And Return To The Job. At Times This Was Expediated By The Facilities Being Transported Down River On Scows, Making Overnight Stops At The Larger Camps. However, This Scow Traffic Was Frowned Upon As It Disrupeted On Job Production

In Order To Preserve The Permafrost There Was Little Or No Pregrading. The Machine Was Termed "Pioneer", Followed By Cars And The Rails Similarly On The Opposite Side. Up To One Mile Of Track Was Laid Daily With Temperatures At Down 50 Degrees Below Zero And Winds In Addition. The Following Spring Railway Embankment Was Formed By Haulilng In Granular Materials Final Surface Of The Railway. Senior Supervisors Were Andy (Moonlight) Anderson And Michael John O'Sheas. Manager In Charge Was Major J.G. Maclachan, Professional Engineer, Now Residing In Winnipeg
