description: | A Band Of 180 Highlanders (33 Families And 25 Single Men) Left Scotland Late In June 1773 Arriving In Nova Scotia On The Sailing Ship "Hector" With Rear Mast Fore- And- Aft Rigged And Other Masts Square-Rigged. The "Hector" Was An Old Dutch Vessel Not In The Best Condition. In A Storm Off Newfoundland She Was Driven Back So Far That It Took A Fortnignt To Recover The Lost Distance. Food And Water Ran Low During The 11-Week Crossing And Sickness Claimed 18 Lives. On September 15th, A Beautiful Day, A Fraser Piper Led The Way As Men Women And Children Waded Through The Shallow Water With Their Few Possessions. Because It Was Unlawful In Scotland Since 1745, The Highlanders Wore The Old But Cherished Kilts And Plaids In Honour Of The Occasion Of Landing At Pictou Harbour, Nova Scotia. description: | Bytown (On The Ottawa River) As Seen From Parliament Hill. Bytown Was Later Named Ottawa. Note The Sail Boats And The Buildings In The Left Background. The Ottawa River Was A Highway From Quebec To The Interior For Indians, Traders, And Explorers. In 1800 When Lumbering Became Important, Philemon Wright Set Up A Sawmill Settlement At Chaudiere Falls Which Later Became Hull. Across The River, No Construction Took Place Until Colonel By Arrived With His Royal Engineers In 1826 To Construct The 131 Mile Rideau Canal To Kingston. The Community (Shown In This Image From The Painting By J.D. Kelly) Which Arose Was Named Bytown After Colonel By. On January 1, 1855, It Was Named Ottawa. The United Canada Had Alternated Its Capital Between Key Cities Until 1858. Queen Victoria Decided That Ottawa Represented The Two Basic Cultures Of English And French And Named Ottawa (Formally Bytown) As The Capital. It Has Remained The Capital Since Then. Canada'S Capital Region Now Covers 1,800 Square Miles And Extends Beyond Ottawa In The Province Of Ontario And Adjoining Hull In The Province Of Quebec |

description: | Discovery Of Canada. John Cabot, Born In Genoa, Italy, And Apprenticed To A Great Trading House In Venice, Wanted To See The Far East. He Thought The Earth Was Round And Was Determined To Sail West Across The Atlantic In Search To The Route. King Henry Vii (Of England) And The Merchants Of Bristol Financed His Voyages To Find Such A Route But He Was Unsuccessful. In 1493, Word Reached England That Christopher Columbus Had Discovered America The Year Before. So Cabot Decided To Try Again. In 1497 With A Crew Of 18 Aboard The Tiny Ship "Mathew" & His Son Sebastian He Reached What He Thought Was The Coast Of Asia. Actually It Was The Coast Of What Is Now Canada. The Cross Of St. George (Flag) Was Unfurled There And Thus John Cabot And His Son Sebastian Planted The First British Flag On North America. Image From A Painting By J.K. Kelly |

description: | Image from a painting by J.D. Kelly. On his last voyage to find the North West Passage, Captain James Cook spent two months at Nootka Sound, Vancouver Island repairing his ships "Resolution" and "Discovery." While visiting an aboriginal village he watched the people there building a dugout canoe from a huge cedar log with stones, hatchets, adzes, and fire. He also noted their crafts of bird and animal masks. In the background is Captain Cook's ship, and the mountains. |

description: | The Linking Of The Lake Ontario And Lake Erie For Commercial Shipping. The First Shovel Was Turned On November 30, 1824 By William Hamilton Merritt'S Welland Canada Co. Overcoming A Fall Of 325 Feet In The Niagara River, The Canal Was Designed To Convey Small Craft From Lake Ontario To Port Robinson, About Halfway, And By Way Of The Welland And Niagara Rivers To Lake Erie. Swift Currents Forced Abandonment Of The Latter Portion And The Canal Was Extended Across Country In 1833 To Bravelly Bay, Now Port Colborne. The Route Has Been Changed, Locks Reduced In Number And Increased In Size. The Welland Canal Has Proved Increasingly Valuable In The 2,300 Mile Waterway Into The Heart Of The Continent. November 27, 1829, Was The Grand Opening Ceremony Of The Welland Canal, Seen In This Photo From The Painting By J.D. Kelly |
