In This Image Prospectors Are Shown Making Their Way To A Landing On The Yukon River Near Dawson. Each Horse Packs As Much As $20,000 In Dust And Nuggets. title: | Passengers on a railway handcar. |
description: | Passengers, from left to right: Inspector Herchmer, Royal Canadian Mounted Police; an unidentified aboriginal member of the crew; Captain H.H. Ross, Charles Denby of Winnipegosis; Mrs. Walter Munday; another unidentified crew member; Miss E. Nichols; and William Carrierre. The handcar, the platform of which is extended to carry crew, passengers, baggage, mail, and other freight, was used on the line between Hudson Bay Junction and The Pas, Manitoba in the Summer of 1909. Since the new track to The Pas was unfit to carry a train, this car was the only transportation in and out of The Pas that Summer. The trip took two days with everyone taking turns at the pumping. A sail could be hoisted to take advantage of the wind. |

During 1873 and 1874 an Anglo-American commission surveyed and marked the boundary between Canada and the United States from Lake of the Woods to the Rocky Mountains. The trails and the supply depots established by the boundary commission were used by the NWMP on the first part of their trek westward in the summer of 1874. Among the personnel shown are: Captain D.R. Comeron (seated 3rd from the left) the British Commissioner; L.W. Herchmer (standing 4th from the Left) the Commissions Commissionary who was later commissioner of the NWMP from 1886-1900; and G.M. Dawson (standing 6th from the left) who in spite of a physical deformity was to become one of Canada's outstanding geologists and explorers. |

title: | Plains Cree Chief Mistahimaskwa (Big Bear, 1825-1888) during his trial outside the Northwest Mounted Police barracks, Regina, Saskatchewan. Mistahimaskwa (Big Bear, 1825-1888) was an independent, strong-willed Plains Cree Chief. Determined that his people should be able to live where they wanted as in the past, he refused to sign Treaty No. 6 because he thought the conditions of the agreement left the fate of the aboriginal people in the hand of the government. Many of his band, including his eldest son Imasis, took part in the 1885 Frog Lake Massacre. Tried for treason in 1885, Big Bear was found guilty and given a three-year sentence. This photograph was taken during his trial outside the Northwest Mounted Police barracks in Regina, Saskatchewan. |
