description: | A Band Of 180 Highlanders (33 Families And 25 Single Men) Left Scotland Late In June 1773 Arriving In Nova Scotia On The Sailing Ship "Hector" With Rear Mast Fore- And- Aft Rigged And Other Masts Square-Rigged. The "Hector" Was An Old Dutch Vessel Not In The Best Condition. In A Storm Off Newfoundland She Was Driven Back So Far That It Took A Fortnignt To Recover The Lost Distance. Food And Water Ran Low During The 11-Week Crossing And Sickness Claimed 18 Lives. On September 15th, A Beautiful Day, A Fraser Piper Led The Way As Men Women And Children Waded Through The Shallow Water With Their Few Possessions. Because It Was Unlawful In Scotland Since 1745, The Highlanders Wore The Old But Cherished Kilts And Plaids In Honour Of The Occasion Of Landing At Pictou Harbour, Nova Scotia.
