description: | Canada's first Trade Tready. Viceroy and Governor of New France, Count Frontenac meeting with Iroquois Chiefs and Deputies of the Five Iorquois Nations at the mouth of the Cataraqui River (Now Kingston, Ontario). Frontenac planned a fort on Lake Ontario to resist the English and Dutch claims on the fur trade. To pacify the Iroquois and impress them, Frontenac brought an armed force of 400 including friendly Aglonquins and Hurons and several cannons. The Chiefs were received with presents and feasting. Convinced by Frontenac of his deep concern for their people, the Chiefs agreed to the French terms. Thus came about Canada's first Trade Treaty. Frontenac returned to Montreal confident that he held the key to the Great Lakes. On his return he took eight aboriginal children with him to be given a French education. King Henry Vii (Of England) And The Merchants Of Bristol Financed His Voyages To Find Such A Route But He Was Unsuccessful. In 1493, Word Reached England That Christopher Columbus Had Discovered America The Year Before. So Cabot Decided To Try Again. In 1497 With A Crew Of 18 Aboard The Tiny Ship "Mathew" & His Son Sebastian He Reached What He Thought Was The Coast Of Asia. Actually It Was The Coast Of What Is Now Canada. The Cross Of St. George (Flag) Was Unfurled There And Thus John Cabot And His Son Sebastian Planted The First British Flag On North America. Image From A Painting By J.K. Kelly |

description: | Image from a painting by J.D. Kelly. On his last voyage to find the North West Passage, Captain James Cook spent two months at Nootka Sound, Vancouver Island repairing his ships "Resolution" and "Discovery." While visiting an aboriginal village he watched the people there building a dugout canoe from a huge cedar log with stones, hatchets, adzes, and fire. He also noted their crafts of bird and animal masks. In the background is Captain Cook's ship, and the mountains. |

Among the personnel shown are: Captain D.R. Comeron (seated 3rd from the left) the British Commissioner; L.W. Herchmer (standing 4th from the Left) the Commissions Commissionary who was later commissioner of the NWMP from 1886-1900; and G.M. description: | Image from a painting by Rex Woods. Henry Kelsey at 14 left England with the company of adventurers of England trading into Hudson Bay. He quickly learned native ways as a friend of the aboriginals. He even prepared an "Indian Dictionary." He was the first man to record musk ox and buffalo, and in 1690 he went 1000 miles into the interior with the Assiniboine. In his diary found in Ireland in 1926, he recounted his discovery of the Canadian Plains. A bronze plaque marks his Deerings Point Base in The Pas, Manitoba. He was the first white man to travel inland from Hudson's Bay to eastern Saskatchewan. He was captured twice by the French and was named Deputy Governor of the Company in 1714. He became Governor in 1718, the first to rise through the ranks from apprentice. He was recalled to England in 1722 and died almost forgotten. |
