She was an International Toastmistress for 9 years; Chairman of the Winnipeg Centennial Committee of East Kildonan in 1974; and active in the Anti-Pornography Committee; and a founding member of the East Kildonan Horticultural Society in 1967 and President for 3 years. She was Chairman of the East Kildonan Junior Gardeners Program for 5 years. She ran successfully for election in 1974 in Leighton Ward and served for fifth term on Council. She was Chairman of "International Year of the Child" for Winnipeg. She organized Concordia Hospital Auxiliary in 1980. She was also Chairman of Share Christmas 1970 (which sent over 8 tons of food, clothing, toys, and books to the Shamatawa Reserve, Manitoba). |

She was educated at Alberni Indian Residential School, Hope High School and Vancouver Vocational College. She married Robert Joe and had 3 daughters. In 1963 she was a practical nurse. From 1969 to 1971 she was Vice-President of the Yukon Association of Non-Status Indians from 1975 - 1978; she was Chairman of the Yukon Indians and the Law Committee From 1975 - 1979. She was a member of the Board of the Yukon Indian Women's Association and of Ye-Sa-To Communications Society from 1975 - 1979. She was a player and coach of the Yukon Ladies Softball League. She was Justice of the Peace and Executive Secretary to the J.P. Council from 1980 to 1982. She was a committee member of the Skookum Jim Friendship Centre from 1969- 1971 and from 1982 -1985. She was elected to the Yukon Legislature on June 7, 1982, and re-elected on May 13, 1985. She was appointed Minister of Health and Human Resources on May 29, 1985. She was a member of the New Democratic Party. She lived in Whitehorse, Yukon Territories. |

description: | Mary Riter Hamilton (The Artist), Was Born To John Riter (A Farmer And Sawmill Operator) And Charity Zimmerman (From A United Empire Loyalist Family) In Teeswater, On., In 1873. Her Father Moved The Family To Clearwater, Mb. Where The Family Lived A Pioneer Life. In 1889, Mary Married Charles W. Hamilton And Moved To Port Arthur. Charles Ran A General Store There Until He Died In 1893 And Then Mary Moved Back To Manitoba And Began Her Career As An Artist. In September Of 1894, She Opened A China Painting Studio And Taught The Art. In 1901 She Went To Europe To Further Her Art Studies And Stayed For 9 Years In Paris Where Her Paintings Were Accepted By The Academy. From 1905 On Her Work Was Exhibited Regularly . In June 1906 Mary Hamilton Returned To Winnipeg And Stayed One Year And Opened A Studio And Taught. By Then Her Paintings Were Famous . In 1907 She Was Back In Paris. Due To Her Mother'S Illness Mary Returned Again To Winnipeg In 1911. Following Her Mother'S Death Mary Showed A Collection Of Almost 150 Paintings In Galleries Throughout Canada. She Was Commisioned To Paint Battlefields In 1919 And By 1922 She Had Painted Over 300 Pictures And Many Were Exhibited. Later She Lost The Sight In One Eye And Started Painting "Dress Accessories" And Was Awarded A Gold Metal For Them. In 1929 Mary Moved To Vancouver Where She Died In 1954 At Age 81, And Was Bured In Port Arthur Next To Her Husband. description: | Sarah Persis Darrach (Nee Johnson) Was Born In Rosscarberry, Ireland, February 8, 1886 And Trained As A Nurse At Brandon General Hospital. After Graduation In 1911 She Attended Post Graduate Studies In Chicago. In World War I She Served In Britain, France, Belgium And Germany And Was Matron Of The First Canadian Hospital To Move Into Germany After The Armistice. She Returned To Become The Fourth Superintendent Of Nurses At The Brandon General Hospital. She Was Awarded The Royal Red Cross, First Class Which Was Presented To Her In Brandon In 1919 By Hrh The Prince Of Wales. After Her Marriage To Robert Darrach In 1923 She Engaged In Volunteer Social Service Work And Was A Founder Of The Citizens Welfare League, Which Lead To The Development Of The Children'S Aid Society, Christmas Cheer Registry And Children'S Summer Camps. In 1936 She Became The Dean Of Women At Brandon College. Darrach Hall At Brandon University Is Named After Her. It Is Pronounced "Dar-Rah" Hall (The Irish Way). In 1971 Brandon University Gave Her An Honourary Doctor Of Laws Degree. She Died Sept 25, 1974 |

She Entered The Sisters Of The Holy Names Of Jesus And Mary And After 2 Years Of Study In Montreal She Returned To Teach High School For 7 Years In Winnipeg, Flin Flon And St. Boniface. In 1971 She Resumed Studies In Law At U Of Manitoba, And Articled At Legal Aid Specializing In Criminal Law. Llb. Was Awarded To Her In 1974. She Worked With Inner City Youth And Established A Centre For Them Which In January 1976 Opened As Rossbrook House. Staff At Rossbrook Were Drawn From The Youth Of The Area. They Provided Recreation, Education, Training, Employment, Vocational And Legal Counselling. She Served On Anti-Sniff Coalition, On Canada Works Projects, Chamber Of Commerce Core Area Labour Training Board, Law Reform Commission, Nor'West Health Clinic. In 1978 She Was Named "Native Citizen Of The Year" The First Non-Native Person Thus Honoured. In 1983 She Received U Of Manitoba'S Distinguished Service Award; The Solicitor General'S Crime Prevention Award; And The Order Of Canada. She Died At 45 Yars On Feb. 20, 1984. A Playground Was Named After Her, And An Inner City Scholarship Fund Was Set Up In 1985 In Her Name. Macnamara Hall At University Of Winnipeg Which Houses A Child Care Worker Program Was Opened In 1986 In Her Honour |
