description: | James Clouston came from Stromness in the Orkney Islands, Scotland and entered the Hudson's Bay Company's service in 1842 and sailed in the Company ship "Prince Rupert" to be employed in York Factory. He renewed his contract in 1847 for a further three years and in 1850 he renewed it for another three years. He was attached to Dr. Rae's Expedition of 1853-54 to West Boothia, but returned to York Fort. In 1885 he returned to Europe in the Company ship "Prince of Wales" in the Autumn. His share of H.M. Government's reward to Dr. Jon Rae for first ascertaining news of the fate of Sir John Franklin's pedition amounted to 60 pounds. |

Murray, And They Had 4 Children; In 1890 To A Daughter Of Chief Factor Mctavish. Bedson Came To Canada As A Non-Commissioned Officer With The 16th Regiment. On The Regiment Being Recalled He Remained In Montreal. In 1870 He Came West With The Wolseley Expedition. When Wolseley Returned East Bedson Remained In Charge Of Prisoners At Lower Fort Garry. In May 1871, He Was Appointed Warden Of The Manitoba Penitentiary, Which Was Located At Lower Fort Garry Until 1876, And From That Date At Stony Mountain. In 1885 He Was In Charge Of The Transport Service For The North West Rebellion. He Was An Avid Sportsman. In February I891 He Went To Ottawa As An Adc To The Governor-General And To Serve On The Alaska Boundary Commission. He Died Suddenly In July 17, 1891, And Was Buried In The St. John'S Cathedral Cemetery |

He joined the Company in 1859, serving at Norway House and Swan River. After retiring in 1873 he purchased a farm near Portage la Prairie. He rejoined the Company in 1875, serving at Ile-a-la-Crosse and Norway House, Lesser Slave Lake, Peace River, Michipecoten and Lake Superior. He retired from the Hudson's Bay Company in 1905, residing first at Prince Albert and later at Victoria, British Columbia where he died in 1909. |

Sent To China In 1860 And , In 1861, Following The Trent Affair, Was Ordered To Canada As Assistant Quarter-Master-General. In 1865, He Was Promoted Deputy Quarter-Master-General In Canada. In 1870 He Was Chosen To Command The Red River Expeditionary Force To Quell The Riel Uprising. For His Sucessful Conduct Of The Campaign He Received An K.C.M.G. And C.B.Later Was Promoted General And Created Baron Wolseley Of Cairo And Wolseley. For His Efforts To Rescue Gordon At Khartoum In 1884-1885 He Was Created Viscount And Knight Of Saint Patrick. He Built A Sawmill On Manigotagan River And Sailing Schooner, The "Jessie Mckenney". In 1869 - 1870 Mckenney Was The Only Prominent Red River Resident Who Favoured Annexation To The Usa. In 1870 He Sold Sold Everything And Went To Pembina, Usa. In 1877 Was Appointed Sheriff In Dakota Territory. In 1875 He Returned To Winnipeg; In 1877 He Left And Died In Oregon C1886 |

For A Few Months He Served As Secretary Of State. After Manitoba'S Entry Into Confederation, He Was Elected By The Constutuency Of St. Clements To The First Legislative Assemble And Continued To Represent It Until He Died. He Was Called To The Manitoba Bar In June 1871. He Died On April 11,1875 |

His Education Was At Oberlin College, Ohio, And Studied Medicine At Queen'S University, Kingston And Victoria College, Toronto. In 1860 He Visited His Half Brother Henry Mckenney In Fort Garry And Completed His Medical Degree And Established His Practice. He Was One Of The First Doctors In The Community To Undertake Major Surgery. But He Made His Name As A Trader And Politician. He Assisted In The Formation Of The Institute Of Rupert'S Land. From 1864 To 1868 He Had A Part Ownership In The Prairies' First Newspaper, The Nor'Wester And Was Against The Hbc Desire For Monopoly And Its Lack Of Initiative In Developing The Country. He Opposed Riel & His Provisional Govt. 1869 And Surrendered. With His Wife'S Help He Escaped From Fort Garry In Jan. 1870. He Was Elected Mp For Lisgar In 1871 To 1882. He Was Called To The Senate On Sept 1882. He Was Lieutenant- Governor Of Manitoba From 1888 -1895 When He Resigned Due To Poor Health; He Died 1896 In Mexico |

In 1845 He Came To Canada And Devoted Himself To The Ministry Entering Knox College, Toronto And Was Ordained As The First Pastor Of Oakville, Canada West In 1850. In 1862 He Was Sent To The Red River To Assist Rev. James Black. In 1864 He Married Mary Mcbeth. Under His Direction A New Stone Parish Schoolhouse Was Built That Served The Educational Needs Of Kildonan Until 1904. In 1866 He Was Appointed Missionalry To The Indians (Aboriginals) Of Saskatchewan. He Settled On The North Bank Of The Saskatchewan River At A Place He Named Prince Albert In Honour Of The Prince Consort Who Had Died. Then He Began Teaching The Aboriginals About A Settled Life. The Mission Attracted White Settlers And Prince Albert Became A Flourishing Settlement. Exhausted He And Mary Returned To Kildonan In 1874 And He Died September 30th. |
