The "Hector" Was An Old Dutch Vessel Not In The Best Condition. In A Storm Off Newfoundland She Was Driven Back So Far That It Took A Fortnignt To Recover The Lost Distance. Food And Water Ran Low During The 11-Week Crossing And Sickness Claimed 18 Lives. On September 15th, A Beautiful Day, A Fraser Piper Led The Way As Men Women And Children Waded Through The Shallow Water With Their Few Possessions. Because It Was Unlawful In Scotland Since 1745, The Highlanders Wore The Old But Cherished Kilts And Plaids In Honour Of The Occasion Of Landing At Pictou Harbour, Nova Scotia. description: | This "silent parade" was called by returned pro-strike soldiers in defiance of Mayor Gray's ban on parades. A noisy meeting had been held at City Hall the night before. The mayor feared lest violence erupt if Specials fought with this parade, since there were soldiers on both sides. The demonstrators declared that they would hold the parade. It was exactly the catastrophe the Strike Committee had been trying to avoid since May 22, 1919. |

title: | Aboriginal camp at Oxford House, Manitoba with a York Boat in the water fitted for sail, and to the right a person with an axe. |
description: | The canoes are Western Woods Cree showing an Ojibway style influence in the protruding prows, which was often the case. The traditional Cree design had a straighter stem, more common for calm water areas. This same general model was shared with the Western Woods Cree, Swampy Cree, James Bay Cree, and the Montagnais. |

title: | An aboriginal family building a birch bark canoe. |
description: | Making a canoe was a family affair. Every Spring a family would have to decide how many and what kind of canoe they would need for that Summer. This canoe normally lasted two seasons of use. The canoe builder stripped the bark from the trees in early Spring, the women gathered spruce roots, peeled them and mixed spruce gum and ash to make the pitch used to waterproof the seams. The actual building of the canoes took six to eight weeks. Seen in the photo is the family with the bottom layer of birch bark weighted down between stakes that determine the shape of the canoe. The women and older children sew another layer of bark on each side to bring it to the proper height and seal the seams with pitch. The canoe builder will then fit stems and the preshaped gun whale, side and bottom slats, and then the preformed ribs. Final sewing and sealing is done by the women. |

The Ottawa River Was A Highway From Quebec To The Interior For Indians, Traders, And Explorers. In 1800 When Lumbering Became Important, Philemon Wright Set Up A Sawmill Settlement At Chaudiere Falls Which Later Became Hull. Across The River, No Construction Took Place Until Colonel By Arrived With His Royal Engineers In 1826 To Construct The 131 Mile Rideau Canal To Kingston. The Community (Shown In This Image From The Painting By J.D. Kelly) Which Arose Was Named Bytown After Colonel By. On January 1, 1855, It Was Named Ottawa. The United Canada Had Alternated Its Capital Between Key Cities Until 1858. Queen Victoria Decided That Ottawa Represented The Two Basic Cultures Of English And French And Named Ottawa (Formally Bytown) As The Capital. It Has Remained The Capital Since Then. Canada'S Capital Region Now Covers 1,800 Square Miles And Extends Beyond Ottawa In The Province Of Ontario And Adjoining Hull In The Province Of Quebec |

Viceroy and Governor of New France, Count Frontenac meeting with Iroquois Chiefs and Deputies of the Five Iorquois Nations at the mouth of the Cataraqui River (Now Kingston, Ontario). Frontenac planned a fort on Lake Ontario to resist the English and Dutch claims on the fur trade. To pacify the Iroquois and impress them, Frontenac brought an armed force of 400 including friendly Aglonquins and Hurons and several cannons. The Chiefs were received with presents and feasting. Convinced by Frontenac of his deep concern for their people, the Chiefs agreed to the French terms. Thus came about Canada's first Trade Treaty. Frontenac returned to Montreal confident that he held the key to the Great Lakes. On his return he took eight aboriginal children with him to be given a French education.
